Cargo Underwriter – Loadsure

As Cargo Underwriter, your primary role will be to provide underwriting expertise and first-class service to our customers, with a proven track of digital insurance platforms and channel partners whilst building and managing a book of business for Loadsure’s Ocean Marine in the US. You will be building, developing and overseeing Loadsure’s cargo products. You will focus on the accurate and timely delivery of work and build and manage relationships within key accounts. You will support setting up a solid governance framework around allocated projects and ensuring a smooth delivery.

You will be highly organised and comfortable building relationships and working with all levels of the firm. Stakeholder management and communication will be vital to the success of the role.

Key responsibilities

  • Generate, underwrite, and analyze cargo submissions and renewal business in accordance with underwriting rules and guidelines, insurance laws and regulations, and rating manual rules
  • Production of quotes, binders, and policy insurance workflows
  • Develop and maintain agency and broker relationships
  • Request and process report of values/sales for annual adjustments and profit-sharing returns
  • Maintain a profitable renewal book of business
  • Evaluate risks and determine if certain exposures fall within the scope of Loadsure’s underwriting guidelines
  • Project requirements and timings to develop Loadsure cargo products
  • Aid in the design of project management templates, project design scope documents, and define internal project
  • Monitoring cargo projects to ensure goals are met, projects are on time, on scope, and on budget. Resources are adequately utilised, providing direction and insightful solutions to challenges when needed
  • Provide oversight and challenge of project documentation, progress against plan, risks, and issues for projects being managed by others

Key competencies

  • Solid knowledge of Marine insurance programmes with an emphasis on globally compliant Ocean Cargo programmes
  • Ability to advance broker relationships, negotiate and effectively assess risk
  • Experience delivering presentations to senior stakeholders
  • Proven attention to detail/extreme precision about the content of requirements of documents, weekly reports, and status updates
  • Handle inbound and outbound sale calls
  • Identify and pursue opportunities, including up-selling
  • Retain and sell new business to new and existing customers
  • Support sales teams in pitches for new business
  • Experience estimating, scoping, and designing projects and policies
  • Excellent communication/organisation skills and proven ability to forge and maintain relations with clients

Skills and qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years insurance experience (ideally within a logistics background)
  • Existing broker relationships
  • Experience and understanding of policy forms, including broker manuscripts
  • Experience marketing to specialised brokers
  • Basic understanding of CAT peril modelling/pricing
  • Must be able to coordinate and facilitate discussions, meetings and project-oriented workshops across client
  • Comfortable dealing with internal and external senior representatives
  • Possess a process improvement mindset, ability to understand the sales process, technical integrations, and client onboarding processes.
  • Experience with basic technology implementation (ie. SAP or TMS)
  • Must have outstanding interpersonal and problem-solving skills
  • Strong numeracy skills
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills
  • Effective listening and strong communication skills (verbal and written including grammar)
  • Comfortable dealing with internal and external senior representatives
  • Eagerness and willingness to learn
  • Accuracy and attention to detail
  • Self-starter and takes initiative
  • Must have outstanding interpersonal and problem-solving skills
  • Willing to travel


  • Knowledge of the London insurance industry is an advantage, as well as having an understanding of insurance and insurance distribution
  • Experience of Lloyd’s of London market
  • Enthusiastic about emerging technology and insurtech
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint
